We’re a long-established company with premises in Hertfordshire that are home to our whole team – people who design, handcraft and install your gates to the highest standards and provide your servicing, maintenance and repair.

On this page, we’ll walk you through every stage of how our team help you expertly and efficiently as you go from thinking about a gate to seeing the reality working for you at your home or commercial premises.

Before we jump into the detail, check out the video below to
see how we take you from design to the installation of your gates.

Take me to

1. Design

Are we the best people to help you?

The reason we like to have a chat with you early in the process is to help us understand what you’re looking for in a gate. This is our starting point because if we don’t think we’re the best people to assist you, we won’t waste your time.

We don’t need a script; we quite simply talk gates in an open and transparent way – sharing our know-how and answering your questions. Remember, we’re experts and there’s no such thing as a silly question.

Speak to our experts. Call us now on 01763 853 663 or email us.

If you’re happy with what we’ve discussed, we’ll then arrange a no-obligation appointment for you with our M.D. William, who really knows his stuff when it comes to gates and what they can offer. He could probably write a very large book on all things gates!

Before you meet, we’ll send you a brochure with some pointers to help you get the most from your visit.

What to expect from William’s visit:

We always records a very short video of what’s involved for your specific project, so we have a clear understanding of your requirements, and reference points for certain parts of your installation are captured – nothing is left to chance.

Ask our experts for straightforward advice on choosing a gate.

What we do after the visit

We are very pleased with the work and Paul and Richard were absolutely excellent. Can you make sure William is aware that he has two of the best, if not the best trades people that I have ever had working on the house. The attention to detail was fantastic.

Planning ahead for installation

While we’re going through this final sign-off process, it’s also time for the installation admin team to get involved.

You’ll receive an email from them explaining what happens next and arranging a pre-installation visit to confirm measurements, answer any questions and check the site and gate location once more. They’ll also take details of all the numbers you require to be added to the SIM card if you’re having a GSM intercom system, and memorable codes you’d like to have for keypads.

This visit is from our installation manager – who’ll also talk you through what we need, including access to power for the tools and water for concreting posts in. He/the team will make sure we’ve thought of everything for a smooth-running project and check if we need to do any work in advance of the main installation.

Once we have final sign-off from you, and our Installation Manager is happy that you’re happy, the crafting will get underway.

2. Craft

Handcrafting wooden gates – not all wooden gates are the same

All our gates are manufactured here on our site in Hertfordshire. We do this to control the quality of our gates at every stage.

It will come as no surprise that we use premium quality wood – and traditional wood crafting processes. These are often more time-consuming for us, but we know that’s how to offer you real, long-lasting quality.

Here’s what you can expect from AutoGate crafted hardwood gates:

Crafting for quality

Fabricating our metal gates

Our team members fabricate our gates on our own site, using their many years of experience and excellent skills to cut, weld and drill with precision to create a high-quality, durable gate. We have invested in all of the equipment needed to make even very large gates here on-site in Hertfordshire.

Not all metal gates are the same

We use 3mm thick metal because it’s long-lasting and has less chance of rusting. Some companies only use 1.5mm, which might appear more cost-effective. However, it can rust more quickly and erode.

Crafting for quality

Once your gates have been produced, they’re degreased, blast cleaned and anti-corrosive primed, before being powder coated (a dry process where an electric charge causes a dry powder to fuse to the metal surface) – resulting in a smooth-finish coating that’s a barrier to rusting and is more resistant to chipping and scratching. We also offer the option of thermal zinc spray system.

While your gate’s being made, we’ll be getting ready for the next stage: the installation.

3. Install

We’ve been successfully installing gates for over 20 years. Our experience means we can select the most reliable products for you and those best suited to your needs, giving you a hassle-free installation. We only work with reputable industry leaders for all the component parts we use.

We’ll arrange the installation start date with you and let you know how long we estimate it will take. Generally, most installations take somewhere between two and five days, but invariably, this will depend on the amount of work involved in your project.

We’ll ask you for any relevant information. For example, if you’re having an intercom, we’ll need the mobile numbers you wish to have set up on the device. Or if you require temporary fencing, we can check availability.

Expert Tip

We’ll keep you up to date on your planned installation date. If there’s a delay, due to the weather or anything else, we’ll let you know.

expert tip

We were very pleased with all aspects of this project. All staff were prompt and reliable and friendly – nothing was too much trouble. We love the look of our new gates, they suit our surrounds very well. Thank you to all staff particularly the on-site team.

Mr. Jones, Benington

Day one of the installation

The on-site team will introduce themselves and give you a brief overview of how they’ll work while they’re at your property. They’ll aim to arrive with you between 8 am and 9 am each day of the installation and they’ll be polite and courteous throughout. They’ll confirm with you what to expect on each day of your installation.

Minimum disruption

Our team will work quickly and efficiently. There should be very little disturbance at your property. Vehicles should still be able to enter and leave because most of the work is carried out to the side of the driveway.

You can rely on the team to leave the area clear, tidy and safe at the end of each day. When your installation is complete, everything will be as they found it – but with the addition of your stylish, practical new electric gates.

Our team will work until they’re satisfied that the operating of the gates can be handed over to you, so we’ll need someone (over 18) to be available on the last day to complete this handover. We’ll give you a clear demonstration of how to operate your entry and exit system, and how to manually release the gates from the electric supply/motors – this is how you’ll operate the gates in the event of a power failure.

They’ll make sure you’re completely happy with everything before they leave you. In the unlikely event of a problem once the installation’s been completed, one of our dedicated engineers will return to make any necessary adjustment.

Generally, installations are able to continue in spite of the vagaries of the weather we’ve grown accustomed to. If we have any unexpected delays, unforeseen circumstances or particularly bad weather, this may delay us starting your project or extend our time with you. We’ll keep you informed of this as soon as we can.

4. Maintain

Once your gate’s installed, you’ll no doubt want to keep it looking good and running smoothly for years to come – just like you would with a car. That’s where regular servicing comes in.

Read more about that here.
