Gates not closing? Before you call us out, there are some things you could look at. Have you checked if anybody has put the bin in front of the photocells by mistake? Are weeds growing in front of them? Are they covered with snow or frost?

Got existing gates with automation?

If you ask us to look at your existing automation, rest assured that if we can fix it, we will. However, we know from experience that most times when we get called out for this reason, we have to replace it. Here are some of the reasons why – and it’s usually down to its age:

Replacement gate automation

There are several reasons why you might consider replacing your existing system. One common scenario is damage due to accidents, such as being struck by a vehicle, which can compromise both the functionality and safety of your gates. In such cases, replacement becomes not just a matter of aesthetics but a necessity for security and reliability continuity of use.

Another reason for replacing gate motors is the desire for a change in the type of automation. You might want to switch from above-ground (where motors are visible on the rear of the gates) to underground automation for a sleeker, more aesthetically pleasing look that is hidden away. Conversely, moving from underground to above-ground automation can be a practical decision, especially in areas prone to flooding or where maintenance access is a challenge – we’ve seen installations carried out by others where this scenario wasn’t factored in/discussed initially with the property owner, and therefore making this switch can significantly reduce the risk of damage to the motor due to water ingress, ensuring the gates operate more reliably.

Moreover, the longevity of gate automation systems is a critical factor to consider. Typically, systems last between 8 to 10 years, depending on frequency of usage, environmental conditions, and routine maintenance being carried out. Over time, wear and tear can affect the performance and reliability of the system, making replacement a practical long-term solution. Updating your gate automation system not only enhances its functionality but also aligns it with the latest Health and Safety Executive regulations and technological advancements, offering improved security and convenience.

What’s included in your comprehensive service?

Some aspects are legally required. Some are specified by automation manufacturers. Some are built on our experience of what needs attention and regular care. For example, we reseal everything so it stays watertight. We’ll pick up on stuff that if left for another three months might well be a problem. We’ll deal with factors like safety edges that have been caught by a vehicle and damaged – not only to make sure they operate properly now but also because if water gets in through damage like this, it could ruin the wiring and cause bigger issues down the line.

Here’s more detail on what we’ll do:

Please note: Where a call-out/repair is to deal with accidental or malicious damage or interference with the system by someone other than AutoGate Services personnel, a call-out charge will apply at our current standard rates.

“I would like to commend George for delivering 10/10 service to a very satisfied customer today.

He let me watch and ask questions while he carried out his repair and service. He gave me very clear explanations of what he was doing and why. He came across as extremely competent and thorough, and very focused on giving me the customer what I needed.

So, very well done, and I would love to have him back for my next service.”

Health and safety are priorities

It’s worth remembering that your new, or existing automated gate(s) is in reality a machine, that potentially can cause significant damage/serious harm if not installed correctly, or regularly maintained. Stringent regulations are in place and all electric gate installations must conform to the Health and Safety Executive Machinery Directive/DHF Code of Practice, which is updated from time to time.

Metal gates are generally crafted by us in a way that’s considered to be ‘safe by design’ and all our gates are installed in the manner most conducive to assisting in the prevention of hazards (such as crushing at the hinge points or trapping of a person/child’s limb), which is the main consideration of the HSE. We recognise that not all companies are as meticulous about safety as we are and if you require us to attend to repair your existing gate(s), we will carry out a survey of your installation, prior to undertaking any work, and if upgrades are necessary, we’ll provide you with a written report/quotation of the additional requirements, so that you can enjoy peace of mind that you fully meet the directives/code of practice.

As the responsible provider, we must make sure that the gate system is safe (whether we installed it or not) and takes the current HSE regulations into account and adheres to them. Our installations are fully demonstrated when we hand over to you and are accompanied by instructions for use and maintenance, along with a Declaration of Conformity, and are CE marked as required.

All motors fitted by us comply with British Safety Standards and the current HSE and DHF regulations; our motors are generally 24 volts and either hydraulic or electro-mechanical. 230v motors are no longer compliant due to them not having a built-in ‘stop/back off’ facility and are rarely used as they require additional safety devices to be applied to achieve meeting current regulations – this also makes them significantly more expensive.

Please also note that once an automated gate is installed, it becomes: the owner’s, property manager’s, or landlord’s responsibility – under various pieces of Health and Safety legislation – to ensure that their system is regularly maintained to keep it operating safely. If your gate were to cause injury, you could be held liable.

Rest assured, our team members have been through a rigorous training programme that teaches all the legislative and standards-related information to protect both your legal interests and the safety of those who may encounter your gates.

Our accreditations. Your peace of mind.

Our gates and installations conform to the ‘umbrella’ standard shown here and are all CE marked to BS EN13241-1. We’re fully paid-up members of the DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) who liaise with the HSE to ensure that any alterations to the regulations get passed on to us.

Frequently asked questions

My gates are working fine – why do I need a service?

We’re sure your gates are working well and a service is not to remedy any issues you may be experiencing, it’s more that carrying out the routine inspection ensures the gates meet the HSE current regulations and checking parts over will keep them working efficiently for many years and prevent unexpected (potentially costly) problems.

Can Anyone Service My Gates?

As mentioned above, there are stringent regulations surrounding work carried out on your gates and this means that a handyman, electrician or someone with an engineering background, is not be the best person qualified to work on your gates, particularly as that person will be liable in the event the gates cause damage, injury or worse still fatality.

What does a Service Involve?

The following details probably won’t sound very important, but neither does the all-encompassing phrase ‘electric gates’, which simply conjures up an image of some kind of barrier at a property entrance that moves. In a nut shell, a service may take up to an hour and will involve an engineer putting the gate through its paces to see how it’s running in general, apply lubricant to moving parts, check over the control board and batteries (where applicable for wireless safety devices) and working out if the gate meets the current stringent HSE regulations.

How often do I need to have my electric gates serviced?

Servicing of gates at a domestic property should take place at the very least once per year and will prolong the life of the motors, detect/prevent any potential issues, and ensure you’re still meeting the current safety regulations. Residential developments, commercial premises and schools will need bi-annual or potentially quarterly servicing, dependent on usage. Generally, you don’t have to be available at the property when we attend (so long as we have access to the power supply), and the service should take between forty and fifty minutes to complete.

What’s so special about AutoGate Services engineers?

When our engineers carry out a service at your gates, they’ll arrive in their suitably stocked company vehicle and they’ll be well presented in their company uniform – we don’t use subbies, all our staff are employed by us -and they’re polite and respectful of your property. They have a genuine desire to be helpful and their knowledge base is continually updated with internal and external training.

I’ve accidently damaged my gates – can they be repaired?

It does happen! We’re used to component parts of your installation being affected by an accident of some description. Delivery drivers, guests visiting your property and even you hitting/reversing into photocells, posts, or the gate is not unheard of, but many elements are replaceable.

If parts are needed how long will I wait?

Our engineers have a selection of the most common parts required to remedy a breakdown or very minor accident on board. They also have remote-control fobs on board for you to purchase, and they can be programmed whilst we’re on site. More specialist parts have to be requisitioned directly from the manufacturer and may take a couple of weeks to reach us. You can be sure that as soon as we’ve received the item, we’ll call you to arrange a suitable date with you to return.

How do I organise a service call or repair with you?

Simply give us a call on 01763 853 663 – option 1. We’re here to help and some repairs can be carried out whilst we’re on site (depending on what’s necessary to get your gates back up and running). If we need to order parts, our engineers will email a report to the office team and you’ll receive a quotation from us for the repair. The engineers will also report back any additional safety devices that are needed to ensure your gates are fully compliant with the current HSE regulations and we’ll email you a comprehensive report on our findings.
