What type of automation is available?
There are three types of gate automation: underground, electro-mechanical ram and hydraulic ram.
Underground automation
This is perhaps the neatest type of system as the mechanisms are underground and out of sight. However, you needn’t worry about having your driveway dug up for routine maintenance – lids on the underground storage boxes allow easy access to the motors. The motors are IP – ingress protection – rated, meaning they are effectively sealed against intrusion from foreign bodies such as tools, dirt and water.
There are factors to consider when choosing gates with underground automation. The first is the size and weight of your gates. The part of the system that turns the gate – known as the shoe – is fairly small. That means that while underground automation can be well suited to metal or smaller wooden gates, it might not be suitable for large, fully boarded gates. Add a stiff breeze to the equation and the load can be even greater.
Electro-mechanical ram automation
An electro-mechanical ram uses a drive screw to power the movement of the gates. The system is metal on metal, so must be kept lubricated to ensure continued smooth operation – regular maintenance will take care of this.
These rams are capable of moving heavier gates and pushing against high wind forces. However, the sensitivity of some electro-mechanical systems when pushing against a particularly high wind may cause it to judge that it’s hitting an obstacle, causing the gate to incorrectly retract.
Hydraulic ram automation
Hydraulic rams are powerful and aren’t generally affected by adverse weather conditions, making them a good all-round choice. The operating units are self-contained, so the aesthetic appearance is neat and uncluttered.
